WoW uses "realms" which is actually a cluster of servers.
There are 222 realms according to the WoW site. There are 9 million players according to World of Warcraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. There probably isn't an even distribution among realms as people like to choose the ones with the best/lowest ping/lag and also the gameplay they like (pvp/non-pvp servers). For the argument's sake, if we assume that there is an even distribution, 9,000,000/222 = ~40540 players per realm. However, that's a worldwide number, and all those players will not be online at once. And I would assume their player count includes alternate characters as well, so only one character per real-life player would be on at one time. If we assume that the > 12hr/day player is somewhat less common, you can expect that only half the world's players would be on at any point in time. From there, if you assume that 3/4 of those players have alternates that would have to be considered offline, you have about 15000 actual characters per realm, and I would think this number would be pretty high compared to real values. I bet more than 3/4 of players have alternates, and I'm sure quite a few have more than one alternate, so that number is probably several times what it should be, which if you start dividing, it would get down to 5000 fairly easily. There are probably other approaches to solving this problem -- it's similar to the "How many gas stations are in the US?" interview question. |

Whoa, riptide calm down on the math dude. He was talking about server caps, not how many people have a character on each server.
Either way, your math is wrong. It's 9 million subscribers, not 9 million characters. It's probably closer to 40 million characters. WoW has a 10,000 player cap. As you already know Huxley states a 5,000 player cap. I expect at least 5 starting servers. I doubt they will ever need more than that, but if they do they will raise the cap/move to a new farm in time.

are u kidding me 5 servers!!!!! u can only have one character per server so people will want to make different classes on different servers. and there is gunna be a ton more people than 5 servers of 5000(25000). i wonder if its gunna be like a guild wars setup. were there is cities were u can have a ton of servers but a certain amount of people in that server. then once u go outside it is u by yourself or with a group. I hope it is a lot like WoW, the way that the PvP and instances are set up are nice. but way more than 5 servers of 5000 people.
I think the big holdup on all the news coming from Webzen is that either they're gunna make the online play alot bigger or they're catching up on the xbox so they can release them both at the same time. Last edited by gobbly2100; 02-08-2007 at 12:51 AM. |

First, let me start out by saying I'm not trying to flame you Brene, I am not trying to word anything in an argumentative manner. I do, however feel that the way you have worded your post questions the reasoning of mine, so this post is to defend that reasoning.

Where did you found this number? I'm not trying to discredit the value, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere stated that WoW servers have a 10,000 player cap, and I would like to know where I can refer to if I needed that information again. |

Thank you for actually taking it as debate instead of flame. About a year ago Blizzard stated what they were raising the caps to on "New Servers" and when they moved to the new farm they stated all severs would reach this same cap. You're right, I misread the way you were working it out, my bad. I thought you were going a different direction with it and the way it worked out in my head was differently, my bad. That would work out in theory, but theory is all there is to go on. @ Quote:
I think the highest Everquest ever hit (one of the biggest MMOs to date) only hit around 130,000 at it's peak around 5,000 at initial release. Too lazy to check that, but it's just about right, I played EQ for a long time. EQ2 maybe around 200k. UO maybe 400k. Most MMOs don't even get NEAR 1 million. Huxley isn't well promoted, and most people have lost interest. Please read up on Huxley before you start debating it with me. At least riptide was smart enough to make some good conversation.

do u get that thats 5000 character limit per server so people will make more than one character on different servers so one person could have just as many characters as there is servers. even if there is one character per user there will be more people than 5 servers of 5000. this isnt gunna be a regular MMO game. its the first MMOFPS plus the PC and xbox and are gunna be mixed together.
and by the way u dont have to act like a fag and get all mad about what i said and act like u know everything about the game. the game hasnt come out yet and there is no recent new about the game so things could change a lot from there last posts. i was just sayin this game is gunna be alot bigger than that because of the potential of being the first MMOFPS. even though it has been marketed close to none it will blow up and get a lot bigger than what people think. on the other hand it could suck and noone whould want it lol.i hope that isnt the case though. extra fact Guild Wars has hit 2 million people and it isnt even that good anymore. it was at the very begining. but that is free though. That game leaned lots towards MMORPG then FPS so that's why Webzen say that Huxley will be the first REAL MMOFPS.

From the videos I saw, I seriously doubt the battle gameplay would suck... I guess it's still possible for the quests/race/crafting, etc gameplay to suck. From all the content and videos I have seen, everything looks pretty professional, and I don't think something big enough of a problem to cause people to think the entire game sucks would slip through all that hard work. |

I don't think it's all that improbable to think that Huxley will have 5 servers to start out. After all, how many servers did WoW have to start out? I can't really remember, but I know it wasn't near what it has now and I know there were only about 3 main servers that were high pop.
I really don't know anything about the numbers and technical stuff about servers and how many people are on each WoW server or realm or whatever it is, but 5 might be ok at least to start with. I mean they can always add more. Maybe, if they get 300k people to sign up for beta (once that starts) like WAR has so far lol, then they could think about launching with more servers.

I don't know why this thread is here actually, it's about WoW and not Huxley, eventhough there's a slight off-topic turn into Huxleyland. There are better threads to discuss this in the Huxley General section.
