Default Half Life 1 Help

Ok, so I Purchased Half-Life 1 via Steam a few days ago.
Everytime I start it, the whole f-ing machine crashes. Halflife2 runs perfectly, so I SOULD be able to play the first game with it's crappy graphics.
The reason I'm posting this here, is that I'm not able to post at this site:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/
even though I registered more than two days ago. They need to accept me into the forums or some crap, but they shouldn't need that much time to do that.
I really hate spending money on crap that don't work. Only cost me 9,5$ or something, but hell. It SHOULD WORK!

Anyone here have some advise?

After I click on "new game" or "load game"

There comes a loading panel up where it says something like "connecting to game server". I'm not playing a multiplayer, but since I purchased it via Steam, it's connected to steam, so I can't run it offline.
Anyway, the game bugs during that connecting. The panel never goes past 35%. Only the first time I tried, it worked. But when I died the first time, the game bugged, and now it refuses to start again...

Problem fixed itself for some reason. It was all Norman Antivirus' fault. Coming with the "Do you want to permit halflife to access the internet?" bullcrap after like two whole days of desperate attempts on getting the f*cking thing working.
Ofcourse I chose "YES!!!"

I wanna kill Norman antivirus right now...
