Disclaimer - as anyone who's seen me play will tell you, I suck. I mean really, really suck. I couldn't hit an elephant from ten feet. So take anything I say about guns as being uninformed rubbish, because it probably is.
Sniping might be seen as wussy, sitting up on a hilltop pinging away at people, but whenever your field of view is that focused you are vulnerable. In a populated battlefield you never know who has seen your shot, and it's easy to get sneaked up on. Given that they usually make sniper rifles crap to use at close range (not really accurate but good for game balance) you are really in trouble if someone with a real gun gets close to you. In games, unlike real life (I guess) most successful snipers keep on the move unless they know that their enemy are boxed in. At the start of a BF2 match you can sit in a good position and snipe away for a minute or two and only worry about other snipers spotting you. But after that you need to be either pretty mobile or pretty on your guard to avoid getting turned into mush in a couple of dozen very close range and messy ways. Which is as it should be. Game balance and all that. For every guy that gets smacked from 200yards by someone he never saw and says "bloody snipers", there should be a sniper who gets a grenade shoved down the back of his trousers and says "bloody commandos/infiltrators/spies/nuns" (depending on your choice of game) before being spread across half an acre of virtual battlefield like that moist red confetti you get at satanist weddings. (NB - Snipers vs. Nuns. Must remember to copyright that idea, I think it could be a winner). To make it worse, within a week of release everyone knows the best spots to snipe from, and therefore the best spots to hunt snipers. And given that they make such juicy, juicy targets for many players, the snipers life is often not a happy one. Throw in the fact that your kill rate with a sniper rifle is pretty low compared with, say, charging into the enemy with an assault rifle, and you can find that xp buildup is a slow process. I hope they give us a game in which a sniper can be a useful addition to a team, giving covering fire, scouting ability from the scope, maybe even a bit of useful suppression if the odd sniper round is dangerous enough to send people scurrying for cover while the rest of the team moves in. At the same time I hope one shot kills are kept to a low,low level so that a single sniper is not enough to completely halt an enemy advance. I'm also hoping that the things we've already seen in the trailers and screenies (wide open spaces, but plenty of action in tunnels and buildings) will mean that there are times when sniping is great, and times when it's suicidal. But maybe that's just me.

Alot of what you mention about balance is of course true.
Though like in BF2, sniping doesnt get you as many kills as a machine gunner so if its scored by kills only and not negated by own deaths the balance shouldnt be 1 for 1 really. But I know what you mean and its good thinking all around.

Well put! In Real Life, a sniper will move very slowly and quietly to get to a hide spot and sometimes sit there for days if necessary till he gets his shot. Once the casing has been ejected from the chamber, he is as you say, moving--fast and hard. There is no second chance.

the way I look at it is if "10 out of every 34 people" in a game are going to playing a sniper advancing through land is gonna be slow and if it isn't its because the guy leading the raid has come to his sense is basically being forced to take the losses taken by his team. and no one Likes being told they are "expendible"

Hopefully the battlezones will be varied so that different scenarios suite different weapons.
It would be really cool if on some close quarters maps there was a storyline where you couldn't use ballistic or explosive weapons for some reason... hence having a bashfest instead! Melee FTW! I haven't voted as I just love killing things with whatever I can get my hands on....

Since I'm thinking about enginering, a tank goes well with that proffesion.
My only fear is that my choice will seem like 'powerplay', while it's not (not primairaly, but power corrupts and tanks mess you up completly). Yeah, a fat engineer with a tank he keeps fixing and tweaking, and I'll name it Brunhilda.

I thought that the whole 'getting run over' was a reason in itself. fact is, the goal of the game is to kill the others and meanwhile enjoy yourself. driving AND hurling explosive chunks of metal over large distances seems like fun to me.
and if someone is standing on my tank, then i'm using it wrong. btw, you're not able to play guyver in huxley :? |

Im a hybrid between sniper and melee. I was one of the first assassins in planetside, took about 3 months before people caught on and started copying me. I'm also a handy ranged person. Theirs no in between with me, either its from far away or right in their face.

I would like to do what fire shadow is doing, sniper/melee, because it requires some stealth and I like stealth
With what huxley is doing though with the licenses every 10 levels and such would make it hard to do both and get some vehicle licenses at the same time. I chose sniper and the vehicle I would choose would be a small/fast vehicle to get in/out of sniper spot quickly. |
