Default Graphics Worries

After seeing a view gameplay clips the game looks great. But this also brings worries, frankly im surprised this hasnt already come up, but how will this game handle on lower performance computers?

The gaming market is not a high-end-user-only industry and I hope Huxley won't cut off alot of gamers as a result of this. I have a pretty good computer, the graphics card is the only thing holding it back (Radeon x300 lol (Or is it even worth a lol?)).

Of course overclocking is an option but that only gets us so far in terms of frame rates which im guessing will be an important factor in Huxley at least to some extent. Just wanted to hear your thoughts on this?

well the thing is we have no idea how much you can config the graphics but the unreal games are very good with thinking about average pc's but then again they are only using the engine. so who knows you might need a super pc to get it going.

Well if you have a video card that's not designed for gaming (and that's exactly what the X300 is in particular; a 2-generations back budget card), then there's no way you can or should expect it to run well with the newest engines available (and as of now Unreal 3 engine is the newest most powerful engine with actual games available). So you'll have to upgrade, but don't think that you HAVE to upgrade to the highest-end. You can usually avoid price premiums if you buy cards that are older and still get good performance (nobody HAS to play on unbelievably high resolutions with every single setting on high).

On the one hand, the Unreal engines in the past have typically scaled down pretty well, and UT2k3/4 even had software rendering support available, but there's only so much that developers can do.

I believe there is a market for games that have innovative gameplay without necessarily cutting-edge graphics/physics, but most major developers know that if they can try to make something good AND put it in a shiny sparkley visual package it'll increase their chances of having nice high initial sales.

Then again, Huxley isn't too near competion... you'll be able to run it moderately well on a card that'll cost you between $100 and $150 (dunno what hardware prices are like overseas) by the time it's released. Kinda waiting on ATI/AMD to get on the ball with their DX10 cards, then you'll see faster price drops.

should work fine, dont expect to be running all the bells and whistles of the game as the engine will likely run in dx9 mode rather than dx10

i can imagine system ram will play a key part in performace aswell as gfx cards

as for the OP waiting for the R600, same here, a bit of price competition to bring down the costs of dx10 cards would be nice

Check out this site, ASUS independent, They have a ton of information on everything from cooling to Vregs. There are a lot of guys that are into OCing and building some really sweet rigs (based on ASUS MOBO's of course) but everyone there knows a ton about one thing or another. So if you have a question about upgrading or squeezing the most out of your system for games like huxley you have to go there.

Also patience is a virtue when it comes to all things computers because of moore's law. Wait till huxley is out see if your system preforms well if not then start shopping. Right now is a bad time to buy gfx cards. You need to wait for AMD to ship their 2900 cards. The N has 12 cards or so lined up to smother AMD with. You can expect prices to drop considerably after those cards are realeased.

He has a good point. Spend $100 - $150/200 for a good graphics card (once the game comes out) and you should expect some good results. Better yet, wait until Huxley announces their recommended specifications, and than make your choice - or return to the forums for new advice!

I'm getting the feeling that more betas are wanting beta testers with a high-end rig like this. Im wondering whether recommended specs will be somewhere around a 3.0+ ghz cpu with a nvidia 7x00+ 256mb+/ati equivalent GPU.

HOOAHH!

since the game was supposed to be released in 2006 so its more likely will work perfect on DX9 cards and probs 1k RAMs.

Remember though, that was back in 2006. I'm sure they've made some graphic engine performance upgrades since than to compete with the really nice visual games coming out today.

Radeon 9800s probably won't even be compatible since they don't support Shader 3.0

Good point I forgot about that. I'm more than sure that your gfx card will have to support Shader 3.0 in order to be compatible, even games such as Tom Clancy's Las Vegas won't let you run the game without S3.0 support.
