Just make a commitment to Huxley. Pay 10-15$ (more likely 15, I think) and while you are subscribed, you don't need to buy any other new games. Instead of buying 2 new 50$ a piece games, just play Huxley.

I still can't figure out why games haven't gotten better at sticking in-game ads in the game world to help take the pressure off monthly fees. I mean, it's not like they wouldn't have billboards in the future.

As long as it's not something totally ridiculous and annoying, I don't mind looking at some ads for the sake of paying a little less. If they're done intelligently it could easily fulfill both its advertising duties and fit into the game world so the "immersiveness" oriented folks won't be bothered.

True

I mean if you can spend 50 dollars on a game (cost of Huxley most likely)
you can spend 15 a month....

if paying to play turns you off.... either get used to it or play guild wars cause paying to play is always going to be associated with MMO's...

For 10 to 12$ a month they can have some customer service so paying is a good thing

This would turn me away because as of right now I play world of warcraft and have no reason to quit. While paying one fee is doable going to two would be a bit much.

As long as the subscription is put to good use... I have no clue how much the bandwidth alone would cost per-person, but if they plan on charging $15 a month I hope they will be adding content over time.

MMO gamers in general might be used to subscriptions, but FPS players tend to not. I've bought 1 game in 3 years, it cost me like $45, and it's held my attention for thousands of hours. Paying $50 for a game and then an extra $15 a month would be hard to swallow unless it was something I just couldn't miss. I understand the logistics of paying for server bandwidth and all (even with all the operating costs it wouldn't come out to nearly that much per-person anyways), but that's just how it goes.

That said, Huxley is probably the first game with a legitimate chance of seeing me willing to subscribe (depending on the price and final game of course).

Because those advertisements would detract a ton from the game and wouldn't reduce the monthly fee significantly.

I would, and I expect most others would as well, prefer to pay $5 more per month than have to listen to a goddamn advertisement every time I turn around. And in a game that will be as beautiful as huxley, they would most definitely suck.

How does it go from intelligently placed ads that fit in with the game world to "hearing them every time I turn around"?

There's clearly a middle ground... you see billboards every single day and probably don't think twice, because you've learned to ignore them. And yet companies still pay good money for them. Why would it be any different for a game? You'd learn to ignore them and they'd bring in money. At least you propose a realistic argument though. What I hate is people who claim that advertisements would kill the immersiveness... as if mankind somehow decided to stop advertising in the future.

But the whole point isn't to save money for the people who would already pay, it's to get the new people who don't want to pay that much for a game. It's a tradeoff that's impossible to quantify, but I'm just surprised we haven't seen it already (or have we in games I just don't know about?)

I think advertisements would be a nice way to decrease monthly by maybe a dollar or so. Because i remember in planetside the first movie advertisements were so annoying i almost shot myself but as a right now theyve gotten better and i ignore them quite well

It would also add a slight edge of realism to the game.
Think about walking through the towns and seeing commercials on the walls, half torn gig flyers pasted on the walls.

It something that you take for granted when you walk around, but if there not there everything just look too clean.

Just so long as it was added into the game in the same style as the game is portrayed, so that it belnds well and doesnt stick out too much.

MMO and fees go hand in hand.

As for the advertisments idea, that wouldn't bother me one bit. It might even increase immersion. When I saw the billboards in Planetside I thought to myself, "Hey, thats pretty cool.".

This would work, if commercials for brands we use today would even exist in the year 20XX. I'm going to be pissed if they put adds in Huxley. Nothing is more terrible than going into battle and being debriefed on a Nokia 32XF cell phone.

They could add commercials to add flavor, but not of real brands. The chance of these existing that far into the future, after an apocalyptic event, are nearly zero.

Well for example if you ever played the Fallout series.

They had nuka colar bottles lying around, it wouldn't of been too much of a stretch to see a Coca-cola ebmlem slightly dusty stuck to the bottle.

I'm not saying actual products so to speak but the brand names themselves could be on the walls.

yeah, the idea of free is nice, but it usually leads to ads galore. "free PS9! test now! Get for FREE!!! only your SS# is required!" but the other part is also the quality game that others mentioned. If its free, ads and lack of updating could/would be the case. so im ok with an online fee. as long as its reasonable (50$ a month would get a lil hard to pay...)
