In case you haven't noticed, the term for a certain group of people competing together is 'clan' according to Webzen. Not guild, outfit or something similar to that.
The use of the word clan is pretty obvious due to this being an FPS-game first and foremost, in the FPS history the use of clan is constant. Some people might not like this and still try to use the word they are most used to, depending on previous game-experiences. Hopefully everyone can adapt to this term so we don't have to experience any segregation due to this matter. For me this won't be a problem since I have a long FPS-gaming carreer behind me and clans is about the only term that I am familiar with. I wish that this could encourage people to get used to this from the start so there's no confusion once the game is out. If you have missed it you can read about this (among many places) in the last IGN: Pre-E3 2006 article with Webzen producer Kijong Kang which you can find here: http://pc.ign.com/articles/704/704745p1.html Last edited by Murvel; 04-05-2006 at 08:05 PM. |

There's a problem with that. "Clan" is used for FPS games, that is true, but most of those clans are small in size, usually under 50 people. You see, my "Clan", Xen of Onslaught, have well over 2000 active members in our ranks, and we will have close to 200 people come Huxley. THAT is not a Clan. That is a Guild, Outfit, or something of the like. A "Guild" is made up of a much larger group of players than a clan has.
And people who use Outfit..Planetside is an MMOFPS, and Huxley, is an MMOFPS. Planetside used "Outfit", and guilds, clans or w/e in Huxley will probably use it too.

Who cares? European FPS players talk about having "praccies" and "clan wars" while NA people tend to say "scrims" and "matches"... does it cause some huge chasm between communities? No, because using different words to describe the same thing doesn't make any difference whatsoever.
Lots of competitive "clans" call themselves "Teams" now... doesn't make them any different than ones who still use the old term. |

For all the difference it does (which agree that it doesn't, at the end of the day), I like the sound of 'Outfit' more :D Brings to mind a futuristic militaristic scenario which fits with the Huxley setting :D

Regardless of what we want to call ourselves, Kijong Kang uses the term "Clan" quite frequently. Speculating on what it will be is fruitless if the lead developer is already using the term, clan.
I personally think Outfit is more appropriate, but I'm not the lead developer.

I quote: "Clans can be most easily described as sub-groups of tribes and usually constitute groups of 7000 to 10 000 people." End quote. Of course this is not ment to describe gaming-specific clans just the general idea of a clan. I really can't see why there's a limit to how many that are allowed in one clan, gaming or non-gaming. Wikipedia also states that clans or guilds for that matter can contain up to 1000-person organizations, and this according to the computer gaming description section. |

The word "Clan" is a good use for players who are in multi-gaming communities, The Clan refers to the group of people from that community that are playing that particular game.
Although the word clan has gotten alot of bad reputation because of it's use in other areas of the language.

So let me get this straight. Because the lead developer says "clan" a lot, that means unless we're a "clan", we won't get to play the game?
Because otherwise, this whole argument makes as much sense as North American's "Elevator", and England's "Lift". Same meaning, different word. Get over yourself.

People are going to say what they are going to say. Those used to many other MMO's might say guild, those from Planetside might say Outfit, and those from FPS origins might say Clan. But, no matter what anyone says.....
ITS THE SAME THING! SAME! THEY'RE ALL TALKING ABOUT THE SAME CRAP, JUST USING A DIFFERENT TERM! I hate threads like this. Some idiot always thinks he has some brilliant insight into how everyone should speak. Happens every damn game. I don't care if the Lead Dev floats down infront of me and declares that he is Jesus/Allah/Buddha/L Ron Hubbard, and the correct term is clan. I'm going to call my group an outfit, and anyone who thinks I should call it something else can go cram a lightbulb up their arse, and go take a seat.

With that said, everyone are in their full right to disagree with my opinion. Since it's just what it is, my opinion. But I won't stand with you calling anyone an idiot here. You are lucky that I still am in a somewhat good mood. Let this be a warning to everyone, if this happens again I will give you some vacation from the forums. |

Go right ahead and give me a vacation if you want. Last I checked, I can freely have the opinion that you are an idiot. And from your post, I do have that opinion. Keep the text there, by all means. I have no plan whatsover to edit it in any way. Also, keep on telling everyone that that need to get used to a way of saying something. While you're at it, perhaps you can make everyone in the world decide on a way to say soda (or pop, depending on where you're from)

Doggan: You can have, hold, and cherish lovingly and tenderly, any opinion under the sun, stars and the moon. However, stop short of expressing it, especially if it is abusive and derogatory.
A little known fact about the freedom of expression principle: It stops short of violating other poeple's rights. Basically you can say what you like, as long as you don't infringe on other poeple's rights. And calling poeple idiots is definitely in violation of such rights.
