Greetings, all. First time poster here, 2 year lurker.
I used the search function on all of the forums to look for any reference of this, but couldn't find any. Has anyone else noticed how many ideas huxley shares with a previously released free mod for any source engine based game called Dystopia? Three classes, two sides, similar weapons, similar upgrades and other things. Nearly everything I've seen of the content in this game mirrors Dystopia, which had an official release over 2 years ago. Thermal vision? Yes. Stealth? Yes. Spider grenades? Yes. Grenade Launcher? Yes. Some of these ideas are found all over FPS'es but there's a lot of really creative ideas that it seems have been borrowed. Now I'm not accusing Huxley of "stealing" ideas (if there is such a thing), I'm just noticing how completely similar these two games are. Dystopia. A Cyberpunk Game for the Source Engine. Once again, I apologize if this connection has been noted before, but I couldn't find it. |

First off, what game is "better" is purely a matter of opinion. Multiplayer games cannot be inherently better or worse than each other, assuming the gameplay mechanics are in working order. It all comes down to the other players, hence the word multiplayer.
Secondly, I'm not trying to claim Dystopia is better. Hell, it's not even an MMO so I couldn't effectively compare the two. I'm just giving the community something to ponder and, if they own a source-engine based game, a completely FREE game to play while waiting for huxley. Just because it's my first post doesn't mean that I'm any less a fan of huxley, I came over from huxleynexus back in the day so I've been following this game for a while. Please don't come in my thread baiting trolls and claiming your opinions are absolute. |

Haven't played it, but they do both seem to fit the cyberpunk universe type of thing (our soon to be future displayed as a different world filled with harsh realities etc.).
And as you said, many fast pace FPS share very common types of guns. The upgrades (I saw stuff like leg boosters for dystopia) are also a similar idea. Huxley has said they're going to have something like 100 different abilities like sprint, thermal vision etc. but we have yet to see more than a handful, so hopefully they'll be more for release. It's true many games have many similarities, especially FPS. That's why when an FPS comes out with a truly new idea or a new way to give the game a different feel, it's a pretty big deal in the gaming world. It's probably pretty hard to come up with an original idea that would work on a massive scale and appeal to a large audience, so companies tend to throw in things they now will work. And at the same time, there are so many games out there (popular and not so popular) so even if you sat yourself in a room and took no information from outside resources, in an attempt to create a really original game, you would probably have a bunch of things in common with games already out there, just by chance and by people generally realizing what would be fun and what wouldn't. So sure, Huxley could have borrowed things directly from dystopia, and from 100 other games at the same time (I'm sure they had plenty of influences). Or, though I think it would be unlikely, it could all just be coincidence.

Arguing whether or not dystopia is fun is a whole can of worms I'll quietly sidestep in this thread and just say that I disagree.
In all of the content released by webzen so far, all I can see is similarities. Upgrades, weapons, classes, it all seems the same. |
