In one of the interviews with the creators, he talks about how weapons that are attained by higher skills will be allowed to transfer to lower level characters. I seriously hope this doesn't end up in the final game.

I am not a person who necessarily wants to run around killing first time or casual players (noobs), but in order to keep character progression a main source of the games replayability, (important since theyre depending on monthly subscription fees), all items and weapons should have to be earned by the individual.

I played UO since the end of the beta and through third dawn, and in that time i saw the game destroyed by friends dropping unlimited resources into new characters to produce 100% skilled characters in a day or two.

In my day, we took a broadsword into Covetous and swung at harpies for hours, only to fight over the 89 gold pieces. Good ol' days when MMO's weren't so p*ssified. (*=u)

I saw that too and I'm not really sure what that means. Maybe a higher level could give you a gun that you could use but maybe to him it's nothing special while to you it's the best thing you can use at the time.

And still (though weapons and armor should be part of the game) this is an FPS where we should focus on the gameplay and not if some low player happens to get his hands on a good gun. He will still have to spend the license points to use it, and he'll only be able to use that one gun until he levels up some more.

But I do agree with you. They have said there will be different qualities of each gun (correct me if I'm wrong) and personally I wouldn't want anyone to just hand me the top quality gun right away. I like to work for things myself so I can kind of be proud of the things I earned and it kind of takes away from it when someone else can just get it the first day they start playing.

I'm in no way hoping that time played will replace skill. I know that guns and armor won't be the deciding factor in fights, but I would still like to see some work go into getting the best armor and guns.

Didn't they mention this in the interview/article where they got into details about the level/rank system? I know we've talked about it in other threads.

I think they were talking about vertical vs horizontal growth, and how like every 10 levels your character will get access to a new group of weapons (similar to the "license" idea). So I would think that you would still have to be within the minimum level range requirements to use something. That said, a level 40 player might give his old armor from level 39 to someone who's level 30, or something.

I think he's talking about one of the very old articles. From what I remember they were talking about higher level players benefiting from helping out lower level players. And remember, just because you have a really big gun in your hand doesn't mean you can use it well. It might be possible to tote it around, but that doesn't mean accuracy, reload speed etc will be what the higher levels get. There's plenty of ways they can have this kind of functionality in the game without it destroying gameplay. Remember that the weapons and armor are not going to be the determining factor in a fight, skill is.

True, a better gun won't be the only deciding factor in a fight, but:

better gun + better armor = advantage.

if better equipment doesn't do anything for me, if my character isn't dependent upon "stats", what's the point in a "persistent" world?

I play these types of games like I bowl, it's a game of personal best. I want to earn something better, not specifically for the sake of kicking lower levels *ss. I hope they will limit usage like you say, but I have an instinct to believe that every mmo has been f'd up in the name of "fairness".

My guess is that it will be like Connnn (sorry didn't count the number of n's) said. You may be able to give a lower level the best he can use at the license rating (or whatever they decide to call it) but it won't be able to compare with earned equipment. They may add a binds when picked up system like in WoW to make sure you can't give away the really, really good weapons that take hours to find (or at least I personally would like to see one).

devil's advocate i guess?: "so because i wasnt born with pure pwnage skillz, i can't have the leet weapons? oh that's fair, you had no control over yourself being coordinated and smart, but you deserve uber weapons of death?... so because i'm deaf and blind, i can't have a chance at getting good weapons even if i work really hard and spend a lot of time playing? that's silly! it's a video game, it should promote fairness" l2p

the weapons might be transferrable to lower level people but without the proper license u can't bring them into battle.
i think the scenario they're imagining is a high level person with an expensive shotgun could give it to a friend who also has a shotgun license but might not have the funds to purchase it on his own.
