I just thought i would post this, because after being in a game with teamspeak ( Day of defeat source from valve ) im REALLY disliking it. granted , the purpose its supposed to serve is a good one. but it turns out more that you have some person with a very heavy accent or a kid on there saying somthing, and you have no freaking clue what it is ( this is sinario #1 )
#2 you hear the other team talking , so you dont know who is saying what and end up being shot in the head because your following what some one else on the other team said. #3 you have billy bob and buba talking to each other about somthing COMPLETELY unrealated. like one telling the other he should pull his pants up. #4 it kinda breaks the feel of the game, and you also hear the person breathing or somthing going on in their background. feel free to post your own probs with teamspeak, if you dont have any , then pls , i ask DO NOT MAKE THIS INTO A ARGUMENT ! I dont want to be arguing oppinion. discuss on the other hand ... |

Sounds like you were on a really poorly organised TS server...
On my clan's TS server we have seperate channels for different games + teams and another for people who want to talk about nothing in particular... I totally agree on the accent issue though, i have a scottish woman in my clan and she tells you there something doing something somewhere then you get sniped 'oooh thats what you were saying' (note: im not saying scottish people are bad... everyone sucks equal amounts)

I've used both and i liked TS better (i found it was a more organized program).
From what my wow guild did(we used vent, but you can do the same in TS), you have seperate channels for different things ( almost like a forum in that way). This allows you to keep random banter of of the important discussion.

i've never been on a TS server where both teams were in the same channel as that really stupid when both teams know what everyone is doing (you can also password protect ts servers/channels). as for #4 usually other members will request that you fix your mike, or make it so that it isnt always on.

Ive been using TS since planetside came out and cant imagine not using it for games. Ive used Vent as well but i just didnt like it.
1 can be partially resolved by using a TS server that is using a high quality codec rather than the more common medium quality ones that people use to save bandwith. Turning down your game volume and leaving TS louder also helps here. As well as time to get used to their accents.. coming from a multiracial planetside outfit .. we never really had any trouble understanding the 10+ different strong accents of english that were being used all the time. 2.. well it sounds like the server you were on didnt use channels.. you can have any number of channels setup on a TS server, team 1 simply uses one channel, team 2 the other. If the teams are working together, you can set people on both teams to be "channel commanders", they can talk to each other across channels but only channel commanders will hear them wen they use their special command talk. 4. Insist everyone uses "push to talk" if its a problem, that cuts out background noise as its only transmitting when someone has hit the transmit key. But as I said.. ive never really seen any continuous problems, there will be the occasional slipup but its occasional, these days I would argue that its the other way round for me... it ruins the atmosphere of teamwork games not being able to talk to them directly. My outfit also had a system where all primary orders were typed in game to make sure there could be no confusion.

Yeah it pretty much depends on how organised your clan is.
My clan uses Teamspeak and it?s a very well organised system we have. We play many games, so each game has its own channel (can't remember them all off by heart, but here are the major ones we have; Planetside, OGame, Everquest, Everquest 2, Counters-strike, Battlefield 2, WoW Euro, WoW US, Random Beta Testing, and just a channel people use to talk about anything) and each of these channels have their own sub-channels for different Teams or squads (eg. Planetside has Squad 1 - 3, Counterstike has Terrorist and Counter-terrorist, BF2 has US and MEC/China, etc...) Everybody uses the 'Push to talk' feature which prevents you from hearing random talking, breathing whatever. And we all use headsets which cuts down on the background noise. And now I?m off to watch the last 3 episodes of ?Wolf?s Rain? :D

Agreed with nubs on those. Most of the time the clan you're working with you will already have known long enough. We require everyone to use Push-to-talk rather than voice activated. Accents you do get used to especially when you play a lot. Channels and sub-channels need to be laid out correctly and in the worst case scenario you can limit voice rights to certain people if the TS server requires registration. I've only used TS though. Currently my headset is broke so I can only listen in on our PS games. It sucks not being able to communicate "Hey, cloaker behind you!" in less than 5 seconds
Oh! There's also a program called TSO (teamspeak overlay). It brings up the persons name in a fairly unobtrusive hud display. A bit choppy/buggy with some games (WoW in particular) and large TS servers 100+ people can give you packet loss but it helps you learn the voices quick.

Yeah, TSO is useful if your not sure who in your clan is talking, but wasn't there a problem with it that stopped it working with certain things, like windows XP Service pack 2? or was that eventually fixed, i havn't needed it in over a year

Well, For scenario #1 as you said, I found it to be a codec problem. Changing the channel's codec more often then not, Solves that problem.
I do like TS alot better then Vent. myself. In the Vent servers i been on, The sound just doesn't quite seem right to me. I think TS has better sound quality

But yeah I love being on voice and chatting with friends it adds another level of gaming for me. I don't know how I ever got by without it. But to answer your question ...Ventrilo for teh w1n!!! |

Vent is much better quality then TS or RogerWilco(i fin hate RW..) but if we are all playign games and some1 comes in to talk about unrelated things we ask them to move and if they dont we just move them and lock the channel.

I actualy have a small Teamspeak server, I have used ventrilo a few times but I really don't like it, My TS server has different channels for different games so for exampleif you are playing Huxley :P then people will join who are also playing the game in the same server too.
I agree with a previous comment about an organised server, If you do not have a good admin around it can suck alot. If anyone plays any of these games and would like to play with some other gamers who also play any of them then please PM me for infomation. Battlefield 2 Call of Duty 2 World of Warcraft Counterstrike Source Thos are the games we mostly play but there are some others |
