100vs100 combat with 5000 per ~realm is what they have said.
Some people are guessing that the capitol cities and other possible gathering places are "no combat zones". They also gave examples of PvE and PvP objectives occuring simutaneously (two groups fighting it out suddenly get jumped by hybrids and cease fire on eachother to fend off the hybrids) so quests might be something like "rescue the princess and stop the other race (other players) from rescuing the princess. Also, don't get eaten by hybrids (NPCs)" so you could concievably work together to accomplish the objective, indeed it might be impossible to accomplish without working together at some point, but only one team gets credit for completing. A system like this would keep random combat out of the major cities (as the technology can't support 2500 players vs. 2500 players) while still forcing you to at least consider cooperating with other players who could concievably shoot you in the back once they don't need you anymore while giving you at least some people (your own race) who you can trust (mostly). Each "world" will be hosted by a cluster of servers and I am 99% sure that all PvP areas (there may or may not be seperate "PvE only combat" areas) will be instanced spreading the load across the servers. The two (or three?) main cities will also likely be on their own servers. So a server cluster will likely consist of 3 or more servers and the capacity of each one will likely be far less than 5000 players. If you've ever done a massive PvP raid in an MMORPG or tried to run a FPS server you'll know that supporting real-time combat with large numbers of people is difficult and having over 1000 players connect to the same server over the internet and run an FPS game isn't going to happen anytime soon. MMORPGs get away with it because they have almost no physics and lag doesn't affect game play as much and people learn to accept lag if there are more than ~200ish people near eachother and they assume that the 1000-3000max people connected to a realm at the same time won't all try to go to the same place at the same time (indeed, they might not even let them). So this "5000" players per realm number seems like it's inflated as it may effectively just be two 2500player realms with cross-realm battlegrounds which isn't too horribly impressive from a technological standpoint. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see to know for sure though. I wouldn't be surprised if 100vs100 ends up being 64vs64 (I actually think they said 200vs200 at one point, but that might have been a mis-quote) and "5000" becomes 4000. Still respectable numbers though, I'd be happy enough. Better than bad performance. |
