One thing you guys need to remember is that just because you've got advanced weapons and vehicles doesn't make an old thing obselete. As one person stated you can just drive up a car and waste everybody in the trench. However if you've got 20 people in the trench, half of them open up with Anti Vehicular rounds on the vehicle while only the heads and shoulders showing, bye bye vehicle.
Another thing to remember is WW2 trenches weren't all straight lines, 10ft of viewing distance before the curvature of the trench took the rest out of your line of sight = no minigun ownage.
Not to say that a person coming in from behind or the side wouldn't rip them up with miniguns, but it's not the be all end all you imagine.
As for planes and such I'm still waiting on any announcement for attack craft or jets and whatnot and how they will be used. From what I've seen of the weaponry so far there's really nothing to take down an enemy plane with.
Furthermore there's 2 problem from a development standpoint for trenches.
1.) Do the devs want the open areas to be used for anything besides transport times.
2.) PvP, do the developers want the PvP's front to be capturing different objectives constantly or have those objectives be defensible?
Taking these two things into account (There are more, but these are the big ones) you have to think that if the devs want the open area to be fought in, defensible positions are a must. Pillboxes and such have been shown in planetside to be a joke, they're just a nice little box to get killed in. Same with towers.
The way that trenches are different from pillboxes is that pillboxes have doors and windows providing limited outlets for firing on enemies. A trench however has hundreds of feet of places you can pop up and shoot at the enemy.
Another added bonus of trenches is being able to stay out of the line of fire while you coordinate and mass for an attack. Those of you who have played PS know that a group of people massing in a courtyard or outside of a wall are asking for an OS to wipe them all out. What you don't see you can't shoot.
This is getting VERY long here and for this I apologize. Last point for now.
Whether the devs want the controllable objectives (power etc) from being the only points where you fight. PS has done many things since closed beta to get people to fight at certain points from rewards and making the rest just be death traps. If the devs want you to fight over these power plants and bases and not in the open fields trenches won't happen no matter what.
HOWEVER, if they want to utilize the amount of land available to them (which they do if they're smart, waste not want not) they'll be thinking of ways to make the open areas defensible and meaningful to fight in. Trenches may not be the way they go, but I do hope they have something up their sleeves.
As a summary. Trenches are both good and bad, due to the new weaponry they won't be as effective as they were in WW2 but they are still useful. They've got good and bad points to them. We'll have to wait and see.
