Trenches + Grenades = Bad
But the idea is awesome.
I could kind of see it more for a defensive battle rather than an "open" battle. Say that one faction was trying to capture a city (don't know if this is possible, but would be great) and the defenders had a trench system. The attackers would really have to outdo themselves to capture that city.
And no, this does not seem fast paced like the game is supposed to be, but think of trenches as the strategic side that the game is supposed to have.
