Have you ever tried playing a PC game with a gamepad?
Most console shooters are designed to be more forgiving when it comes to aim, and do things like slow down your crosshair when it's on your target, etc.
That said, there's been a few really good FPS players on PC who did use handheld gamepads. But playing with a gamepad is always a problem if you plan on playing on LAN, because you have to worry about converters and drivers and stuff a lot more than using keyboard/mouse.
