I've been a big fan of MMORPGS played since eq and have betaed about 30 of them since (including planet side). This is my feedback on the question.

MMORPGs will always be around i don't think they will fade out origianl eq is still up and running as is shadowbane and countless others that are just different flavors to the same thing.

MMORPGs are more of an untapped resource they come out more like a continuing game of CTF log in run for the flag a bit log off hope you made some progress.

Traditional MMORPGs all hit the same leveling rut and charater development. Yes some games have 10000000 classes aka rubies of eventide and others have talent tree type things to "alter" your charater like WOW. But when it breaks down to it you are X and you will do X and you will never do anything other then X because you are level 12 and have been assigned X as your abilities.

MMORPG opens you up a bit by allowing you to pick how to play and what to do you may only have a pistol but you will learn to use a rocket or maybe you won't and you'll drive transport trucks or man a gun this is all based on how you feel like playing. And that freedom of charater creation is what truely seperates the two.

In regaurds too PVP if you haven't found PVP in MMORPGs you simply havne't looked hard enough. Almost EVERY MMORPG has some way or aspect of pvp in it that is both challenging and enjoyable. A problem that most MMORPGs hit and has been pointed out already is that they have the level gap. At level 12 you have weaker version of level 14 and because of htat you are more likely to loose. This is not a set in stone thing many PVP setups in MMORPGs do involve skill such as distancing yoruself, knowing how to counter someone else's abilites, and knowing the power/your abilty to fuel and use your skills effectively.

Another point that was brought up is the the left click do this do this do this. The chain effect if you will each action is just a set of orders that all link together to make one total effect. In all honesty thats whats in an MMOFPS too the difference is where you look is a factor.
picking a gun = choosing a spell
firing the gun = using the spell
looking at the target = clicking on the target

and thus the movement of you or your enemy effects your combat potential.

Here is the HUGE downside MMOFPS and i'm hoping that the ranking system they have in some way shape or forum effects this. From the SOUNDS of it you will be able to twink a charater EXTREMLY easily. You and a few of your other expereinced friends run through 2 mid level dungeons you guys have done 5 or 6 times kill a bunch of things grab a few guns and hand them to your new buddy who just started. Or you buy some armor and toss it to him. Now instead of a basic charater you've started with a charater that has 175 armor insteadof 100 and a weapon that can knock off 3 entry level mobs in one shot instead of 3 shots per one mob.

I hope that they insitute some form of soulbound stuff such as WoW did to stop this or say you can't use this till you've branched out Horizontally to use equipment X. And that you have to be Rank X to use item X. Kinda of like a certification system. If you don't know how to use it or you aren't proficent with it then although you may have it. You will not be able to use it. It would also be nice to see some quest that get you certified with a weapon. Say you want to use a new plasma rocket or soemthing like that well since its not a standard thing first you need to go horizontal into rockets them up a few ranks and then you will get a quest. After completing the quest you gain usage of said weapon. Armor deterioration would be good as well to prevent twinking. Sure its no biggy to go and grab a little bit of armor for you buddy when he starts but after his first missiona nd its all torn up you gotta do it again ... and again and again. Thus not STOPPING you from helping him but preventing you from just going SURE HERE IS THE LATEST AND GREATEST HAVE FUN!

Anyways in conclusion the two are not TOTALLY different as it seems some post have discussed. The real difference is in how the game play is going to develope. No one wants a game where you just join in and are the best because then the people who have been playing forever feel jipped and no one has anyting to look foward too. Custimaztion i think is going to be this games strong point and i hope to see it pan out in the best way possible.
