Monthly fees pay for continued content. Guild Wars has to release constant "stand alone expansions" which in reality is the same thing, only paid in bulk...and with the annoyance of new installs.
Paying hasn't prevented a certain game from completely taking MMO gaming by storm. Disillusion yourself if you must, but the numbers speak for themselves.
