Well you could really do that in any game. There's never a sure thing that an enemy is going to head your way. Even sometimes playing Unreal Tournament 2004 I would hop in a tank and stick with a few other people to guard a base, and nobody would ever come.
What I'm hoping for is a way for make defending a base always have a purpose. Lot's of people like setting up defenses, but unfortunately many times those defenses never get into action.
So if a few people could get a mission to go scout an area, and a different few people got a mission to go defend an area, those two squads would definitely meet up and fight it out.
They could even add it in to the battlefields as a side mission or something. So you join in the battle and at your nearest base you can get a mission to go scout an area on the battlefield. And on the enemies side, they could get a similar mission that purposefully matches the two squads up to scout/defend the same area, thus starting a nice squad vs squad fight that has good potential to snowball into a giant all out crazy battle!
