I can't speak for everyone, but personally I have come to terms with the fact that there will most likely be a monthly fee.

I don't like the idea of having an item mall in the game. I don't want players to be able to log on and spend a bunch of money and then suddenly have the best armor in the game. especially if I had spent the last 6 months playing the game like it was meant to be played and getting my gear that way.

Sure nobody wants to pay a $10-15 fee every month, but if you really think about it, the money you pay for buying armor will go to updates in the game right? So that means new armor, then you have to pay more money to get the new armor. So you're basically doing the same thing. The only difference is that (in my opinion) you're ruining the game for those who like to play a game the way it's meant to be played.

Games are meant to be fun. They are a way to pass the time (sometimes all of your time) and help you relax or just give you something to do.

I really like everyone in a game being connected and on the same page. If some people bought their items (with real money) and others played the game to get their items, there would be a separation of players. Those who played through the game to get gear would be proud that they did so, and those who bought gear would probably just laugh that they wasted all that time.

If everyone just payed a monthly fee, we'd all be in the same boat and could all work toward endgame gear together and understand how awesome it is when someone gets a really sweet gun or something.
