maybe have an area map in the room, and a picture of a room so you can highlight "Read Email" "Check Mission Status" "Check Combat History" "Check Character Info" etc

sort of like in wing commander or rise of the dragon.

I like the idea of having a personal space but perhaps it wont be as much of a gameplay extension as a convenient way to do your character maintenance.
