Um, I don't think they divide the players in brackets. I think they just put a bunch of people in a huge battle zone and let all hell break loose. And about selecting zones, Im not sure. I think you get to take a train, that might have been what you seen, from there you can go to different markets, and yeah, different battle zones. And im pretty sure that to get into the battle zones you go through a tunnel and end up in the battle zone... Im not sure, but I think that is how it goes.
