A focus group is just a 1-time small scale test to get user feedback on how it's developed so far, in the same way they bring in focus groups to test movies before they're done editing.

If nothing else, it suggests that there's not some big beta test that some people are doing but nobody else knows about... this is likely their first test outside of internal dev stuff.
