An article from MMO Gamer says that some kind of cosmic storm happens knocking of giant chuncks of the moon which in turn fall to earth causing the mutations and the new land areas. With that there are also some kind of moon fragments that are mined and used as ammo and power supply for your armor. It also says that they will be scatterd around the battle field as pick ups.
