PvP should not be restricted by battlefields, zones, etc..., that's just lame. You should be able to attack an enemy, anywhere...at any time. Enemies should be able to organize and try to raid towns, bases, fortifications, etc...that's what it's all about. Maybe you can fight them off, or maybe not...who knows. Just don't transmogrify FPS into the carebear BS that all the mainstream MMORPG's have become.
What you want might be a little difficult with the missions and whatnot being instanced... or so I hear they will be.

At any rate, there seem to be 3 main categories that apply to both FPS and RPG, and they are as follows:

Carebear: opposes PvP of any sort, even if it's just friendly competition with a friend. wants only to go storyline and PvE content without being bothered by other players. carebare players of the FPS genre traditionally enjoy the single player campaign modes of thier FPS games, a good example being the single player FPS Metroid Prime for game cube, and a few good examples of an FPS with multiplayer enabled modes but have good single player campaigns that such players enjoy would be Halo, Aliens Vs. Predator 2, and Doom 3. (FPS does not always mean PvP)

Consensual PVPers: These people enjoy PvP, however at thier leisure, meaning it has to be consensual between all participating, no PvP out of nowhere or catching anyone unaware that there is player-controlled enemies. These types usually enjoy Consensually played Deathmatches, CTF matches and the like against human opponents when they feel like PvPing. Sometimes they'll like to jump into free for all arena areas when playing an MMO for the fun of it. While this category does enjoy PvP, they do not want to have to worry about PvP all the time so much as PvP at thier own leisure and consent.

Hardcore PvPers: This category would prefer nowhere to be safe, and wants the possibility of PvP to be found anywhere, sometimes to the extreme that they want only human players to exist and no computer controlled or scripted opponents of any kind; such PvP extremists want PvP to be able to occur whether or not thier opponent likes it, even if they are the ones being caught off guard.

Personally I fit into the consensual PvPer category so alot of instanced stuff works out just fine for me, I'm sure to appease everyone there will be certain entire territories where anyone may enter without warning and attack other players in that territory (all out all PVP enabled areas pretty much), also possibly some PvE missions where the two opposing sides are working to capture the same resource or objective - I'd say it's likely to catch the opposing team off guard while they are trying to haul the mission objective off to thier side.
