If you connect to the modem with your computer, and connect to your computer with your xbox, then you're using internet connection sharing through your computer which slows it down. If you've got money to blow, pick up a D-Link gaming router, it's about $120 and is probably one of the best uses for your money to keep your ping down. Basically its got built in functionality to prioritize gaming programs to send the packets through firts you can be popping out a 500-600k download and max your upload (pretty much) and you won't suffer an ping increases. And yes, i've done it where both of those are running while i'm doing an FPS and still pulling 40 ping.

It's named a gaming router but you can easily set it up for any other type of application. You can also do a whole host of neat little things for restrictions as well.
