Okay this thread got way off topic because someone felt their epeen got insulted. Back to the topic, ladies.
First off, are we even sure if Huxley is going to have a distibutive skill system? (gain 1 level (or a certain specified ammount of xp), increase X & Y stats by Z points?) [This sytem typically has different stats for equipping armour, dodging tactics, weaponry, etc...]
Could it perhaps be, training specific skills with NPC teachers or missions to raise a X stat by Z points? (NPC teaches you how to reload your rocket launcher faster, possibly after a series of quests)
Also there is repetative action system, (think WoW) I hit with X weapon, Y ammount of times, increasing my X skill. - this can also be further developed into I hit 10 targets from 1000+yards away, gain +1 steady hand, or whatever) (or i reloaded my rocked 1000 times so i gain +1 rocket reload speed)
My most prefered Skill system combines both levels and repetative actions (think Morrowind) where if i gain a level from doing specific actions, (like shooting my rocket laucher, reloading it, and dodging) I can train the stats (for shooting my rocket launcher, reloading it, and dodging) more than I would be able to raise my pistol or sniper skill.
[although gaining a level from ONLY jumping *marrowind* lol was pretty retarded]
There are also various combinations of all the previous skills. ex: in Vampire Bloodlines you could use books to raise a stat intstead of spending experience points on it, etc... etc...
Who knows, maybe Huxley has something entirely different or a perhaps a combination for us.
Now spiral, seriously, to say you are going to play 2142 or quake wars just because Huxley may not have the skill system you desire, is ignorant. The creators of Huxley are no doubt trying to take into account all of their options, but you know what? You just can't please everybody.
Some people think it's lame & unrealistic to gain 1 level from killing 100 guys and be able to raise any skill that you want by a nearly equal ammount.
to call 2142 'outrageously amazing' is uhm... stupid to say the least. yah it'll be cool for like... a month? Just like BF2. The beta for 2142 is decent, however, EA has a loaded gun in their mouth because they aren't listening to their players anymore. BF2 had major flaws and all around was a pretty terrible game. Bah, nevermind, I don't want to get into this. Even I'm getting off topic here

However, I don't know anything about Quake Wars, so I can't shoot that one down... yet.
Are we even sure as to what benefits can be gained from PvP? Can a player PvP from level 1 and acheive the highest level/ranks/stats without any NPC interaction, missions, or PvE experience? (like planetside) I would hope not, but that's my opinion from a hardcore MMORPG player. And from what I've seen and read, it fortunately looks like yes, there will lots of NPC / PvE, etc. interaction, perhaps not necessary, should at least be required to obtain or acheive certain things.
So, Scott, to say you aren't going to play a game simply because it *might* have a different view on skill sytems seems blind. It doesn't mean they don't have another unique and innovative system. Just because a skill sytems been done before doesn't mean it will work the best, and just because it worked in 1 game doesn't mean it will work for every other game.
