Actually it has more to do with the teachings of your religion (Of course some it isn't a bad thing) telling you that suicide is bad starting from an early age. Constant reinforcement of suicide as a negative action can still persist even though the actual acts are glorified. "Soldier saves squad by throwing himself on a grenade" That's suicide, you just jumped on a grenade, are you damned to some hell? Granted that's different than jumping off of a building, but the act is the same. "Soldier manually detonates bomb on bridge holding off advancing enemy for friendly forces to retreat" Another suicide. Another glorified action.
