I think trenches would actually be a good idea. They would incorporate an angle not found very often in shooters--teamwork.
People always say that their shooters are so "realistic" and then one guy just goes around killing everyone because he can aim really well. If you look at the real military, you would not see that in a million years.
Now, I'm not trying to say that Huxley is going to be a super-realistic game, but I would still like to see something like trenches that would encourage teamwork.
To address everyones concerns about advantages/disadvantages, here's my two cents:
As felix said, trenches will do more good than bad for this game. Air strikes/artillery bombardments are not really going to be very effective, because instead of having to hit in a 20-30 foot radius around a person to kill them in an open field, they have to hit a 3-5 foot wide trench dead on, which is EXTREMELY unlikely from the distance across no-mans-land usually found in trench warfare. To address the grenade concern, again, they would have to be extremely accurate with their grenades, and even if they did land in the trench, everyone would know about it and would run away from it--if in fact grenades are even in the game.
To think that one man or vehicle could make it across no-mans-land to the other trench and kill everyone is ridiculous, because I couldn't think of a single person that isn't blind that couldn't spot a lone man running 300 meters across open ground in between two trenches. Snipers could ruin it, but the matter could be balanced if it were hard to aim a sniper rifle.
It would slow the game down (which in my opinion is a good thing, as long as it isn't too slow), which would allow for more strategy and teamwork (which, ironically enough, is something that is hardly--if at all seen in shooters), which would then allow for a more enjoyable experience (more enjoyable than everyone on one team being at the mercy of the "star player" on the other team that seems to have magic aim, and that kills everyone without batting an eye), and that is why trenches would benefit this game.

Oh also, on a side note, I think trenches would work REALLY well for a game like Gears of War.
